Learn More

Project Overview

In a 2012 report, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada noted that:

As is the case with many aspects of the Residential School story, there is still much to be learned about the experience of Métis people in the Residential Schools. In particular, there is more to be learned about the degree to which their experiences, and the legacy of those experiences, differ from those of First Nations and Inuit students.
— Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, “They Came for the Children,” 2012, p.69.

This project seeks to learn more about the Métis experience. Interviewers will speak to people who have knowledge of Residential Schools, Industrial Schools, and Day Schools. Information from the interviews will guide future archival research. It may also be used to create educational tools, programs, and other public-facing products.

This project is led by the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO). The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) represents Métis citizens and communities across the province, advocating for their rights, interests, and self-governance. Know History Inc., a private firm specializing in Indigenous and Residential Schools research and interviews, is supporting this work.

Next Steps

The project team will organize and interview people with knowledge of Métis experiences of Residential Schools.

Before the interviews, Know History will host virtual learning sessions to interested participants to provide information on the project and how people can take part.
